Play ball! America is known as a competitive place and nowhere is that more true than in its sports. This course
will take a look at the following points:
■ The basic history and formation of MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA and other major sports leagues along with their
■ Key American athletes like: Babe Ruth, Jesse Owens, Jim Thorpe, Muhammad Ali, Hank Aaron, LeBron
James and Jackie Robinson;
■ How sports played a role in the Cold War;
■ The Olympics, specifically 1936, 1968, 1980 and 1984 and the politics that coincided;
■ College sports, including NCAA and Title IX – including famous college and women athletes like Nancy
Lopez, Chris Everett, Meghan Rapinoe, and Simone Biles;
■ Unbreakable records and how long they’ve stood;
■ Terminology used when discussing the sports;
■ Falls from grace: OJ Simpson, Michael Vick and others who failed to be a role model;
■ The future of sports: camera angles, political advocacy from athletes, stadiums.
We will furher cover the greatest sports moments in American history, such as
■ Jackie Robinson stealing home,
■ Willie Mays’ overhead catch,
■ the Miracle on Ice in 1980,
■ 1988 World Series,
■ 1999 Super Bowl
This course examines the relevance of spatiality, place, and the planetary in contemporary fiction. The recent
interest in the planetary in literature and culture responds to the growing demand for recognition of both the
specificities of places and their exposure to planetary forces and power-structures. Authors from different
parts of the English-speaking world have created poly-vocal narratives that feature specific local experiences,
postcolonial migration and identities, and the response to planetary concerns like the global environmental
Over the course of the semester, we will take a close look at a range of examples to expose connections
between the local, the national and the planetary. We will consider these texts in relation to postcolonial theory,
migration, and ecocriticism to reveal the entanglement of different human and non-human actors and places.
Drama didactics focuses on scenic processes, on acting out and the production of texts in English lessons.
Performative literature teaching enables a variety of teaching and methodological approaches and opens up a
didactic scope that creates very different possibilities for an action-oriented and production-oriented literature
class. Through the use of literature-based dramatic activities a clearer comprehension and awareness of the
text is promoted, a deeper interpretation is allowed and the reading motivation increased.
The current situation presents drama teachers with a new challenge: How can you teach theater in virtual
space? How can closeness arise at a distance and how can texts be staged together at a distance? In this
course we face the challenge of virtual theater and find ways to work theatrically with texts. We will work with
a variety of drama and non-dramatic texts to discover their performative potential in the virtual space. We will
use action-oriented and creative methods in combination with classical analytical approaches to texts. The
drama techniques which are taught in this course can be implemented and applied immediately in the teaching
practice. This course helps students to build up their own repertoire of methods in order to work performatively
with texts in class
Studierende aus geisteswissenschaftlichen Fachbereichen treffen ihre Studienwahl häufig stark interessenbasiert und beschäftigen sich nicht direkt mit der „arbeitsmarktlichen Verwertbarkeit“ ihrer zukünftigen Studienabschlüsse. Irgendwann stellt sich aber unweigerlich die Frage, was man mit dem Studium beruflich konkret anfangen kann und welche tatsächlichen Einstiegsmöglichkeiten in den Arbeitsmarkt sich bieten.
